What Is Play Therapy?
Play Therapy, more specifically, Child Centered Play Therapy (CCPT), is a humanistic form of counselling for children ranging from age 2-10. CCPT is an Early Intervention Therapy. Emotions are an abstract concept. Adults can make sense of these emotions and navigate through therapy using words and emotional intelligence. Children’s development shows that children develop the abstract process around the age of 12. With that in mind, CCPT uses a playroom and many toys to process emotions.
- Play is the child’s language, and the toys become the words.
- It helps the child go from concrete to abstract (the child will use play to process events and experiences).
- Individual counselling therapy.
- The therapy uses different types of play.
- It nurtures the emotional and creative expression of the child.
- There are four stages to the therapeutic process.
- The therapy helps children with disruptive behaviour.
- It helps children with anxiety and depression.
- It helps children regulate.
- The therapy allows for working with the parent to evaluate progress.
How will my child benefit from CCPT?
- Helps children develop a sense of self-responsibility.
- Helps children develop self-control, self-sufficiency and self-confidence.
- Gives your child a place to feel heard, seen and accepted.
